Colchester United head coach John McGreal believes his squad is showing its value following their impressive victory at Newport County.

McGreal was once again forced to change his starting line-up against the Exiles last night, following Drey Wright’s ankle injury against Carlisle United.

He also had to make alterations during the 2-1 win at Rodney Parade, with both Kane Vincent-Young and Doug Loft once again succumbing to injuries.

However, the likes of Lewis Kinsella and Tom Lapslie came off the bench to play their part in the victory and McGreal is pleased with how everyone is playing their part, after seeing his Colchester side claim three wins from their last four matches in League Two.

McGreal said: “We’re blighted by injuries again but the squad is coming to the fore.

“We had to change things again with the injuries but once again, the boys showed this little bit of resilience that we’ve got.

“We had Cole (Kpekawa) playing against Carlisle but we didn’t realise that Kane (Vincent-Young) and Ryan (Inniss) would come back when they did.

“Lofty went off with a little bit of a tightness and Kane suffered a little bit of a recurrence but the boys just adjust and they’re a strong character group.

“We had to change the bench because of that and Kins is part of our squad.

“He’s been in and out but it shows the squad that we’ve got at the minute because everyone is trying to be fit to play.

“He came in and put in a dogged performance and you know he won’t let the team down with his heart.

“The loans have come to the fore and along with Jacko (Ryan Jackson) and Ryan (Inniss), I thought (Brandon) Comley was outstanding (against Newport).

“His composure picking up balls in and around where we wanted to play was great and him and (Sean) Murray were excellent, especially in the first half.

“(Tom) Lapslie then came on and started plugging holes and you need all different types of boys to come and get three points.”

McGreal confirmed that Wright was the latest player to be added to Colchester’s injury list, after he suffered an ankle injury in the 1-0 home defeat against Carlisle, last weekend.

McGreal added: “Drey went over on his ankle in the first half against Carlisle and it’s really heavily swollen.

“He played through the game trying to do things for us but wasn’t able to make it (against Newport).”

Colchester travel to play Coventry City in League Two, this Saturday.
