Tiptree Road Runners had a small team at the biggest event of the winter season, the National Cross-Country Championships, at Parliament Hill Fields in London.

The muddy, hilly course over Hampstead Heath proved a tough challenge, but the Tiptree squad had encouraging runs.

Tina Clarke, in her first cross-country season, was not intimidated by the occasion and finished 520th in a high-quality field.

Phill Clarke led the men’s team home in 1,088th place, completing the 12 kilometre course in 58 minutes 58 seconds.

Ted Skinner, although short of recent training, ran 60m 24s to finish 1,166th, with Rob Hadgraft running 67m 34s for 1,375th position, but Ian Linton found the conditions hard, finishing in 74m 38s to come home in 1,431st place.

Meanwhile, Martin Avent continued to build his training for the London Marathon by taking part in the Bury 20, his first race over the distance, and completed the course in two hours 35m 42s.
