CLARICE Parrott was in fine form for Braintree and District Athletics Club at Essex’s inaugural Junior Indoor Mini Competition in Chelmsford.

The talented 13-year-old won gold in the long jump with a season’s best leap of 4.49 metres and was also victorious in the 60m hurdles.

Parrott was also second in the 60m sprint, giving her enough overall points to take the gold medal, her second in the space of a week.

She had also taken gold in the Essex AAAs Indoor Meeting at Lea Valley, the previous week.

Braintree and District AC was well represented at the event.

They had 11 young athletes competing over all three age groups, with several making impressive club debuts.

The competition covered three age groups – eight to nine years-old, 10-11 years-old and 12-23 years-olds – and was open to schools, clubs and individual athletes.

For many youngsters, this was their first taste of competitive athletics and gave them a good insight on what they can achieve.

The primary idea was to compete in three events out of a possible four in the eight to nine year-old age group, which covered long jump, turbo javelin, standing long jump and 60m sprint.

In the other two age groups, competitors could choose three events from high jump, shot, long jump, 60m hurdles and 60m sprint.

Scores were given for individual times and distances which were then totalled up, to give an overall winner in each age group.

The first three in each age group were awarded medals, while all competing athletes received a certificate for their efforts.

The following Braintree athletes all received certificates for taking part in the competition, with many of them claiming new personal bests: 8-9 year-old boys - Alex Eveleigh; 10-11 year-old girls - Ellie Savva, April Castle; 10-11-year-old boys - Liam Eveleigh, Josh Lucas, Jacob Parrott; 12-13 year-old girls - Katie Bright, Chloe Leach, Debbie Castle, Clarice Parrott; 12-13 year-old boys - James Murphy.
