COLCHESTER and Tendring Athletics Club got their Southern League division three campaign off to a fine start at the Lee Valley Stadium.

They finished third, behind winners Victoria Park and runners-up Harlow.

Enfield were fourth, Huntingdon fifth and Ilford sixth.

There were a number of fine individual performances.

April Castle scored valuable points in four events, with her best being a triple jump of 9.78 metres.

Sister Debbie also worked hard in four field events.

Sarah Kelly produced a fine pole vault jump of 2.60m, while in the B stream pole vault Alicia Walklett came first with a 2m effort.

Saffron Heffer was third in the high jump with a leap of 1.40m.

Carey Hollick showed what an impressive all-rounder she is in her three field events.

On the track, Joy Ogunleye gave a good account of herself in the sprints.

She came second in the 100m, in a time 12.53 seconds, and managed 25.88s in the 200m.

Ami Fosker was third in the 100m, in 14.1s.

Elsie Gray had a runaway win in the 1,500m, clocking 5m 12.90s.

Ellie Cumner finished first in the B stream event, in 5m 27.36s.

Georgina Sturgeon showed improved form in the 800m, coming fourth in 2m 36.16s, with Emma Gadsdon third in the B stream, in 2m 53.25s.

Sian Hicks gave her all in the 400m, while club captain Sian Gifford led by example, competing in the 400m hurdles and 2,000m steeplechase.

In the men’s section, Owen Fookes looked sharp in his 400m, clocking 52.64s.

Akin Akinboh did well in the sprints, clocking 11.84s in the 100m and 24s in the 200m.

Thomas Palmer gave a good account of himself in his 800m race, coming second in 2m 1.3s.

William Page worked hard all afternoon, winning his B stream 800m in 2m 2.49s and coming second in the 5,000m.

Dean Frost, a non-scorer, had a superb run in the 800m, coming second in 2m 3s.

Freddy Richardson did himself proud in his 1,500m, finishing second in 4m 36.93s.

Ermeas Alewerk finished strongly to take first place in the B stream event, clocking 4m 52.06s.

Benjamin Miller looked strong in his 2,000m steeplechase, coming second in 7m 4.7s.

In the field events, there were a number of points scored by Bradley Hicks.

He managed a personal best 19m 99cm in the discus and 2m in the pole vault and he was supported by Emmanuel Ogunleye, Peter Godron, Stefan Godron and Jonathan Lord.
