Dominic King says it was a case of “mission accomplished” after booking his spot at the Rio Olympics.

The Colchester Harriers race walker finished as leading Great Britain competitor at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge in Slovakia in a time of four hours eight minutes, to seal his place at this summer’s Games.

King had already secured the qualifying time needed to represent Team GB in Brazil, having clocked a personal best (PB) of three hours 59 minutes 22 seconds at last year’s German National Championships.

But in amongst a world-class field, the 32-year-old ended the race with no warnings to seal his place for Rio after finishing 32nd overall in the Olympic trial.

It was a world-class field packed full of Olympic medallists, featuring nearly 80 athletes from 29 different countries.

Former St Helena School pupil King said: “It was a case of mission accomplished and it’s a massive weight off my shoulders.

“I needed to make sure that I finished and that’s what I did.

“At the halfway point I was just over 1h 58m and on for a personal best but I listened to my head and focused on the strategy that I had in place.

“It was the first 50k race I’ve had without any warnings so technically, it was good.

“Of course, you always look back and think you could on and done better but I achieved what I set out to do.

“But I just did my own race and had I not stayed strong and focused, I could have got carried away.

“Had I not known about having to finish the race to make it to Rio, I could have potentially got a quicker time or got disqualified.”

Dominic’s twin brother and training partner Daniel King finished the race without any warnings but failed to secure the qualifying time needed for Rio.

He clocked 4h 19m in Slovakia but it is unclear as to whether or not he will get any more chances to secure the necessary time.

“He’s going to keep working at it,” added Dominic.

“Daniel’s my training partner and he wants to make the Rio Olympics.

“A lot of my success is down to my brother and it would be great if he could make it too.”
