Australia put the squeeze on England’s top order in the third one-day international in Sydney, with the tourists 69 for two after 15 overs.
Having successfully chased in Melbourne and Brisbane, England were asked to bat first at the SCG and found it tough going against a revamped attack.
Australia’s Ashes seamers were reunited, Mitchell Starc joined by the fit-again Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, and the trio made scoring tricky on a slow pitch.
Jonny Bairstow was 28 not out off 44 balls having lost partners Jason Roy (19) and Alex Hales (one) to mis-timed shots against Cummins and Marcus Stoinis.
England’s other not out batsman, Joe Root (13no), had earlier been presented with his 100th ODI cap by rugby league star Sam Burgess.
