World Cup star backs Keane to do well

England World Cup winner George Cohen is backing Roy Keane to mastermind a successful season at Ipswich Town.

The 1966 legend, the right-back when Germany were sunk at Wembley, believes the Irishman will get the very best from his Blues squad.

Cohen was at Portman Road on Friday where he accepted a World Cup winners’ medal on behalf of former England and Ipswich manager Sir Alf Ramsey.

Former Town chairman David Sheepshanks made the presentation and was representing the FA.

Afterwards, Cohen, who spent his entire playing career with Fulham, was happy to talk Ipswich and told the Gazette: “Roy Keane is a disciplinarian and he’ll most definitely get the best out of his players.

“He knows the game and has a solid grounding.

“He knows what’s required and he’s at a forward-looking club.

“This guy is passionate about the game and hates losing.

“I’m pretty sure he’ll have a decent season with Ipswich.”

Meanwhile, Liam Trotter has signed a new one-year contract at Portman Road.

The 20-year-old midfielder becomes the fourth out-of-contract Town player to pledge his future to Blues this summer, following Alex Bruce, Shane Supple and Ed Upson.

Trotter, who has progressed through the club’s academy, made five appearances for Ipswich last season before going on loan to Grimsby and Scunthorpe.

“I spoke to the manager and he said he wanted me to stay here which was obviously nice to hear,” said Trotter.

“I’ll admit I was a bit surprised.

“At the end of last season I thought I would be moving on from Ipswich.

“But with a new manager here it’s a fresh start.

“The manager has said I’ll get the chance to show what I can do and that’s probably the major factor in me staying.

“It’s a new opportunity for me.”

Meanwhile, Town’s home game with Newcastle United on Saturday, September 26 has been selected for live coverage by the BBC and will now kick-off at 5.30pm.

It is the second Ipswich match to be switched for TV coverage.
