Jim Magilton admitted his Ipswich Town side learnt a 'harsh lesson' in their 4-1 Carling Cup defeat by Wigan Athletic.
The Blues missed some decent chances and were put to the sword after the break.
It means their Carling Cup dream ended at the third hurdle, after earlier wins against Leyton Orient and Colchester United.
And Magilton said: “For an hour we were very good and created some really good chances against Premier League opposition.
“But the fact we failed to take them came back to haunt us and we learnt a harsh lesson.
“Wigan didn't have to work particularly hard for their goals and our defending from set-pieces was pretty inept.
“We didn't challenge for the first or second balls and paid a heavy price.
“Overall, though, there were plenty of positives to take into Saturday's match against Crystal Palace.
“Wigan probably have serious aspirations of doing well in the competition but my main objective is getting this club back into the Premier League.
“The boys were very disappointed afterwards because some of our build-up play and movement was extremely good.
“But you can't concede goals like that.
“We scored a fantastic goal to get back in the game but then shot ourselves in the foot.”
Wigan boss Steve Bruce added: “When you create that many chances and don't take them you're going to get punished – that's the difference between the Premier League and Championship.
“Credit to Ipswich, though, because they caused us a lot of problems. I'm just very pleased to be in the hat.”
Jon Walters scored Ipswich's goal with the Latics players on target being Lee Cattermole, Olivier Kapo, Paul Scharner and Henri Camara.
