Jim Magilton admitted being delighted that his Ipswich Town side bounced back with a Carling Cup victory over neighbours Colchester United.
The Blues have lost their first two home games of the season and were left shell-shocked by Saturday’s 2-0 defeat by Wolves at Portman Road.
But they hit back with an important derby victory last night and Magilton said: “It was a positive response and that was important.
“We showed a lot more energy. The players didn’t show any real verve in the way they played at the weekend but that was different tonight.
“Losing at the weekend was a huge disappointment so to bounce back in that manner was great and it’s always nice when your two strikers score.
“Kevin Lisbie’s goal was outstanding and then we had opportunities to kill the game off.
“Credit to Colchester, though, because they hung in there and gave us a very nervy last 20 minutes.
“Hopefully this result will give us a little fillip of confidence for Saturday (when Ipswich visit Watford).”
Magilton made five changes to his side and handed a debut to new signing Ivan Campo.
“Ivan did OK,” he said.
“He uses his vast experience to good effect and doesn’t waste many passes.
“He just needs games under his belt and when he came off we lost a bit of discipline in midfield.
“It was important there weren’t too many changes in the side, though, because first and foremost we needed to win the game.”
