IPSWICH Town crashed out of the Capital One Cup tonight after a depressing 2-1 defeat at Carlisle United.

Paul Jewell’s side had been on course for victory after Massimo Luongo netted his first goal for the Blues.

But Carlisle equalised in stoppage time and then grabbed their deserved winner in the first period of extra-time.

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Luongo fired home midway through the first half at Brunton Park.

But it could have been more comfortable, as the visitors squandered golden opportunities to dispel any nerves.

Both Josh Carson – recalled in place of the injured Luke Hyam – and Michael Chopra missed one-on-one chances that were blocked by Carlisle keeper Adam Collin.

Instead, Town were made to sweat in the second half in order to protect Luongo’s strike.

And they were made to pay in stoppage time, when Mark Beck popped up with an equaliser to break Ipswich’s hearts.

David Symington then scored the hosts’ winner nine minutes into extra-time, taking advantage of an awful mistake by Aaron Cresswell.

One other blow was an early injury for Carlos Edwards, who had to be replaced by Jack Ainsley after just 15 minutes.

Luke Chambers took the captain’s armband.

Meanwhile, Daryl Murphy is close to finalising his third loan spell at Ipswich.

The Celtic midfielder or striker is set to join for the rest of the season and his move could be confirmed as early as today.

Town are also being linked with Peterborough United pair George Boyd and Paul Taylor, ahead of the transfer window closing on Friday.

Former Town midfielder Jimmy Bullard, who recently had his contract terminated by mutual consent, has joined MK Dons, signing a deal until December 31.
