Tommy Smith wants to cause a shock at this summer’s World Cup.
The Ipswich Town defender has been confirmed in New Zealand’s 23-man squad for the competition in South Africa.
He will be the first Blues player to appear in a World Cup since Matt Holland played for the Republic of Ireland and Amir Karic featured for Slovenia in 2002.
And looking ahead to the football extravaganza, Smith is determined to cause an upset.
He told the Gazette: “Hopefully we can cause a shock.
“If we can get a win, there’s no reason why we can’t progress to the second round.
“The last time New Zealand were at a World Cup they didn’t win a game (they lost heavily to Brazil, the Soviet Union and Scotland at Spain ‘82).
“So that’s the main aim – to get some points on the board.
“Football’s a funny game.
“If we get one decent result confidence will breed throughout the team.”
