Premier division title for University

The KP Evans and Co Colchester and East Essex League season came to its conclusion with University of Essex thirds collecting the premier division title in a winner-takes-all tussle with Wormingford Wanderers.

Both teams knew that whoever won would take the crown, while a draw would hand the honours to Harwich Rangers, who had already completed their games, but in the end it was the University side that triumphed 2-1.

Ryan Friel opened the scoring for University midway through the first half, catching the Wormingford defence napping and Richard Marshall got their second.

However, Tom Leggett pulled one back from the penalty spot to make the last 20 minutes an end-to-end affair with Wormingford chasing the equaliser.

They hit the crossbar and man-of-the-match Ian Purvis, in the University goal, had to produce a couple of first-class saves, leaving them short of their aim as the game ended with University taking the premier crown.

University were also in action in division one as their fourths were facing Wimpole 2000 in a game to see who would claim the runners-up spot behind Colne Engaine.

In a high-scoring game, Wimpole emerged as 6-5 winners, with Terry Farmer hitting five and Wayne Spires getting the other, while Steve O'Neil and Shaun Plummer grabbed two apiece and Aaron Pearce one for the University.

In division three, Brightlingsea Regent A ended their first season by cementing their position at the top with a 4-1 defeat of Great Bentley A, with goals from Bruce Barnard, Steve Cook, Luke Crawley and Ashley Minter.

Feering won 5-4 against University sixths, who had Shaun Coveley and Ashley Jones both hitting braces.

That concluded the league action, but there is one more game, which takes place tonight when Colne Engaine face Harwich Rangers in the final of the League Knock Out Cup at Stanway Rovers (kick-off 7.30pm).
