Baggies clash isn't do-or-die: Williams
Geraint Williams
Geraint Williams

According to Colchester United manager Geraint Williams, Colchester United are not going to the Hawthorns tomorrow to face West Bromwich Albion in a do-or-die encounter.

The U's face a mountainous task if they are to escape relegation from the Coca-Cola Championship and their position is made even more difficult with West Brom being the division's highest scorers and likely play-off candidates.

But Williams is refusing to look at the match as possibly being the final nail in the U's coffin.

He told the Gazette: "I don't look at this game as do-or-die. I look at it that we are going there for a tough fixture against the division's top-scorers.

"We have to go there and be positive and get a result and we have not mentioned relegation once - that is not what we do.

"What I'm asking from my players is desire and pride.

"We are all playing for contracts next season and are playing for the pride in the shirt and for the people who travel and spend money watching us play. We have to remember all these things."

Williams is not prepared to throw in the towel just yet, despite the situation looking increasingly ominous for the U's.

He said he is not wishing the season was over so he could put the nightmare of nine games without a win behind him.

He said: "I don't want the season to end, I have more pride than that.

"Anyone who wants that at this club is in for a shock."

Although the club have endured a miserable campaign, Williams has continued to back his players through the difficult times.

And while some managers choose to voice their disappointment at individual performances, Williams said he will stick to his principles and will not condemn his players for their poor form, despite some fans calling for him to take a harder line.

He said: "I don't see why the fans would want me to fault the players in public - I don't see what that achieves.

"What we have said is in the dressing room and it stays in there."

Too right it's not do-or-die. Those fixtures were two months ago now!! Here's to next season - and the Johnstones Paint Trophy... Up the U's!

Lets face it tomorrows game is a total mismatch. Next season there will be two divisions between the teams and it will show tomorrow.

Last week we lost 5-1 to the lowest scorers in the division so I dread to think how many top scorers West Brom could rack up if they are in the mood.

"But Williams is refusing to look at the match as possibly being the final nail in the U's coffin"

So its going to be yet another cant be bothered casual display from the Us this weekend then?

Can I suggest that the next big investment the Board make is a tube of superglue to shut this idiot up for once and all.

Im waiting for the call Mr Cowling. Im sorry I went to Hull but my success at Colchester was noted by Charlton and Derby who approached me to be their manager. However the previous chairman wouldnt even let me talk to them so our relationship became strained. I went to Hull to get away from him but now wish to return to the club I had so much success with. However I insist that Williams isnt my assistant even though a condition of taking the job before was he had to be then. I will motivate the players, kick butt and bring a winning mentality. I will ship out Duguid, Mcleod, Davison, Izzet, Guy, Platt, Balogh and Guttridge. I will attract players of the quality of Cureton and Iwelumo. Please call.

haha above me isint phil parkinson!!! and why should we sack williams cant you remeber all the things he did 4 us last season he kept us up and all the presure was mounted on him 2 keep them up but just cause we finished high in the table last season and are getting relegated this season dosent mean he should get sacked we are not a champonship side and williams has done well....

".......and williams has done well...."

Bottom of the table, 9 games without a win, knocked out of the FA Cup by a team from a lower division, on the alltime list for consecutive games without a clean sheet, Ipswich above us?

You call that doing well? If you do then you must be a jerk.

I hear that there may be a position available at Layer Road, to whom shall I apply to? I will happily take over as I will be glad to move back north after my spell in Congo!

Good to see some dark Colcestrian humour emerging at last.Just think - a couple more games and we can be certain of Relegation!
Seriously, everyone who contributes here really does love the club and feels frustrated and dissappointed about this season. The "promised land" of the Championship is about to depart. But next time (and there will be a next time) the club will return and be better equipped financially to stay for good.
Until then.....Up the U`s and thankyou Layer Road.

At least when we're relegated, we can go back to supporting Premier League clubs, guilt free. Bottom of Championship? No suprise with only 500 REAL fans is it?
