Aidan: Dean needs regular action
 |
| Dean Gerken |
Aidan Davison has urged Colchester United number one Dean Gerken to keep playing regular football rather than be tempted by the glitz and glamour of the Premier League.
Gerken22, has this week been linked with a move to West Ham United - not the first Premier League club to be said to have kept close tabs on the highly-rated youngster.
And despite both Geraint Williams and West Ham manager Alan Curbishley denying the story, Gerken is sure to interest a number of bigger clubs, with the U's looking almost certain of dropping out of the Coca Cola Championship.
Northern Ireland international Davison, who is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, knows what it is like to sit on the bench in the Premier League, having done so in spells with Bradford City and Bolton Wanderers.
He told the Gazette: "Dean can play in the Premier League but he needs to play football consistently.
"I had the situation in my career where the bigger club you are at you find better quality players in your position.
"Dean can learn his trade and then play in the Premier League week-in, week-out when the time is right."
Davison feels Colchester's leaky defence this season - currently the worst in the Championship - will not have done too much harm to Gerken's development.
"Dean will be an excellent goalkeeper and will be a better keeper for this season's experience - although people might find that hard to believe. He will draw on the experience mentally," he said.
West Ham could be looking for goalkeeping back-up to Robert Green, should former Ipswich Town keeper Richard Wright move on in the summer.
He is currently on loan at Southampton as he searches for first-team football, having failed to break into Curbishley's first choice side since joining from Everton last summer.
However, Curbishley told the Gazette: "There is nothing in the Dean Gerken link at all."
