Pentney pens one-year deal with U's

Carl Pentney has signed a one-year contract with Colchester United.

The Colchester-born goalkeeper, who was released by npower Championship club Leicester City at the end of last season, initially inked a short-term deal with the U's earlier in the summer.

But having impressed manager John Ward and goalkeeper coach Ademola Bankole over recent weeks, Pentney has been rewarded with a longer deal.

The 20-year-old will now challenge Mark Cousins and Ben Williams for a first-team place, although boss Ward hinted that he could be sent out on loan in the future.

Ward said: "Carl has agreed a one-year contract with us.

"He's impressed me since he has been with us and it's something I was pleased to do.

"With the youth policy we have at the club, he's another young man who we're hoping can push on and do well."

It can't be much fun being the no. 3 goalkeeper, but that's what Mark Cousins was for a long time, and it worked out OK for him in the end. Also if Ben Williams was to leave (hope he doesn't) then at least we'd have two good goalies and should not need to bring in yet another loan player.

Sorry Carl, I forgot, welcome on board, it is great to have another local boy available to play.

No brainer really, I much prefer we have three 'keepers on the books and send one out on loan rather than have to panic and take what's available if we only have two and one is injured.

If Ben regains his place then I feel Mark would benefit more from a loan out to a L2 or Conference club, with a recall option, as at his age he needs regular first team football

Its obvious Williams wil be leaving in January. Westwood at Coventry has refused to sign a new contract and is expected to leave in January so that they can then get a fee for him which then opens up the door for Bens departure. This signing is the prepared back up.
