U's to run the rule over pacey Laurent

Colchester United boss John Ward will run the rule over former Southend United forward Francis Laurent tonight.

The U's will take a look at the French attacker in their totesport.com combination fixture against Stevenage at Broadhall Way.

Laurent, 24, who left the Shrimpers at the end of last season, has had trials at npower Championship clubs but is currently a free agent after leaving Roots Hall.

Ben Williams, Kayode Odejayi and Paul Reid are also set to feature in the match.

He has scored goals against us in the past, he can't be bad. Then again the same applied to Scotty Vernon.

Very highly rated by Southend supporters on the Shrimpers zone. Only reason he left was lack of monies being paid to his account. Would be a good addition to the squad.
Regarding Scott Vernon. Boris, he wasn't that bad really was he?

The U's lost 3-0 tonight. Poor result considering the strength of the side put out. Still need to get a decent stiker in on loan to back up the current few that we have ( and I don't include the flop Gillespie in that number)

Feisty, I agree, Vernon wasn't bad. He scored 2 goals for Blackpool against us, fairly ordinary ones, but they got him the job with us. He scored the last ever U's first team goal at Layer Road, and the first at Cuckoo Farm. The problem was he didn't score enough goals apart from those. But Cureton and Iwelumo were a hard act to follow.
I remember watching a game last season and commenting that the team were playing pretty well, but I couldn't see anyone getting a goal. 5 seconds later, Scotty had the ball in the back of the net. He was that kind of player, but he couldn't do it often enough.
I hope he does well at Aberdeen, but it seems he has so far only come on as a sub there.

Trouble is the Cureton Iwelumo partnership was fantastic! Since then we have wasted lots of money in buying people to fill that void, Thomas and Gillespie have all been errors. People rate Laurent but his career stats say he scores a goal for every six games.....is that someone we can accommodate in our squad???

Did anyone see Exeters last minute penalty goal against Charlton on BBC 1 i player goal highlights. It was a penalty awarded through Curetons persistence in chasing a lost ball then getting possesion and then being dragged over so a penalty was awarded. Do I ever see that happen with Wordsworth the answer NO. He just gives up the lazy sod. Cureton always chased an often lost cause ball got possesion on the byeline ,pulled the ball back and made a goal. Laurent is a good player and last year was a real thorn to us down the right wing at home. He is more a wide player than in the middle and we do have wide players not playing at the moment Medy and Hackney who seems to have dissapeared from the scene.
