Boothroyd - we were punished

Colchester United manager Aidy Boothroyd refused to make excuses for his side after they were beaten 1-0 by ten-man Walsall.

The U's played against the Saddlers for more than 45 minutes with a one-man advantage at the Bescot Stadium, after captain Mark Hughes was shown a straight red card just before half-time for a foul on Ashley Vincent.

But they failed to make the most of their chance and substitute Darren Byfield scored Walsall's winner, deep into stoppage-time.

It looked as though midfielder John-Joe O'Toole had been fouled in the build-up to the goal.

However, boss Boothroyd refused to blame referee Geoff Eltringham for his side's disappointing defeat.

He said: “I don't make excuses.

“I think we had enough in the squad to win the game.

“Their goalkeeper has won the man of the match and sometimes that happens.

“You have to make sure that you take the point which could be the difference come the end of the season.

“But we're so desperate to win we forgot to keep our guard up and we got punished for it.

“We should have won the game earlier and we didn't so we have to accept that.

“Unfortunately, you do rely on referee decisions but I hear that every week from some other managers.

“We have to be responsible and accountable for what we do and we should have been able to finish the game off."

BRING BACK ELITO! BRING BACK EEEELITO, BRING BACK ELITO GET RID OF WOODY! - Also look at the other facts, Magnus and Batth in defence = a long string of games unbeaten. Magnus and Heath in defence = 1 point out of a possible 12. Just shows that Heath is useless! Aidy please get rid of Heath, and wordsworth - Bring back Hackney, Elito, and Pat Baldwin.

I see that Platt was captain on Saturday. Personally I think you need that person at the back in defence. Aidy has stated in the East Anglian today there is enough leaders on the field to sort things out. Well its like saying we will have four managers then on the touchline giving instructions. You only want one person as captain who leads not a whole load of players putting there say in. When I watched Southend last Saturday week I stood behind the goal, and Pat Baldwin was at the back organising his players, shouting at them, and a pat on the back if they done a good tackle or interception. They have now made him captain. I read that Prutton likes to have his say in the dressing room which Aidy says he likes in a person. With him Izzet, and Magnus now Platt who will be captain next. How about Wordsworth.

Nice to see the col gazette name young wordsworth star man. Anthony Wordsworth is home grown talent, and is improving with evey game, he surley is a name to watch for in the future, maybe at a higher level.... I do wish the crackpot critics would go and support some other club, Man U, or Chelsea, then maybe they can win a bit more, and be happy little bunnies. Meanwhile we genuine Col U supporters will enjoy the good times, and still be sporting loosers when things go wrong.

I'm not sure how naturally good Wordsworth is, as he comes across to me as extremely lazy. The amount of work I see from him is almost non existent.

What also winds me up is that I think he's actually quite quick, but only seems to show this when chasing lost cause balls.

Unless he scores, he's not worth having on the pitch.
