Colchester United manager Aidy Boothroyd pulled no punches after seeing his side beaten 2-1 by Carlisle United at Brunton Park.
The U's boss was not impressed after the U's surrendered a one-goal advantage to lose to the Cumbrians.
Boothroyd said: "It was one of the most disappointing games that I've had since I've been here.
"A lot of people came to support us a very long way.
"We had a tough game and we got a break with a man being sent off.
"We played very well in the first half without scoring and we managed to go ahead but after 25 minutes of the second half, we took it too lightly.
"We let them back into the game and we allowed the crowd to get up.
"We were just very, very average."
Colchester now lie fifth in Coca-Cola League One, with 11 games of the league season to go.
Manager Boothroyd has called for more consistency from his promotion-chasing side, in the final run-in.
"Promotion isn't easy – you have to make sure that you're consistent in what you do and against Carlisle, we weren't consistent," he said.
"I have absolutely no idea that with the quality of player at my disposal how we concede two goals, having gone 1-0 up.
"Thankfully, I'm a sensible person and I'll have a look at the game again.
"But I think we thought it was too easy - that we went 1-0 up and that was it.
"Nobody gives you anything though and we have to make sure we learn that lesson very quickly."

Every goal scored by Narwich as you like to call them yesterday was a ball pulled back for the onrushing forwards to slot home, showing exactly how you carve openings out and score goals. I honestly dont think you have a bloody clue about football, much like Boothroyd just lately.
Didn't take you long to mention the budgies again Crazy. I hope you don't watch cricket too, because I don't think I could listen to a whole summer of you.
