U's held to goal-less draw

Colchester United were held to a 0-0 draw by Brighton and Hove Albion tonight.

The U's struggled to break down a well-organised and lively Seagulls side, at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Colchester goalkeeper Ben Williams denied both Alan Navarro and Inigo Calderon in the first half, as the U's struggled to make an impact.

Colchester manager Aidy Boothroyd sent on Kevin Lisbie and Ashley Vincent for the injured John-Joe O'Toole and Clive Platt at half-time, in a bid to find a breakthrough.

But opportunities were hard to come by for the U's and Andrew Crofts should have scored for Brighton when he sent a header wide when unmarked.

We were very poor tonight. Nothing to remember game. I thougt Mark Tierney deserved man of the match award and I thought Wordsworth the worst.

Wordsworth is surely challenging to be one of the worst players ever to play for U's. He is right up there with Gus Caesar in my view. It's not however his fault that Boothroyd keeps picking him but one thing is sure - he is now playing at the highest level he will ever achieve in his career. So too Izett. If anything good is to come from tonights dreadful performance it must be that Izett is now banned for a game or two. The game was simply awful to watch on TV and the only quality came from Brighton. We must have launched the long throw aimlessly into the box at least a dozen times and we won the ball once! It's not looking good.

I must confess that I watched it in The Castle public house. The first half was a drab affair. Things improved a little after the break, although Brighton could easily have taken the points.

I have my ticket for the Brentford game and hope for something better.

The stadium looked deserted on the television screen and I was surprised to see that 3,900ish were actually there.

I am not saying anything............

apart from 90 minutes of crap, and I will not be buying a season ticket next season.
Manager.....Players.
.....you haven't a clue....they deserved to win really.
I am just so embarrassed.....lost for words......no wonder Lambert did one, a team of static, talentless average division one players.
Izzet you are a disgrace the language you directed at a fan at half time was inexcusable you useless idiot! No pace, can't pass and should not have had your contract extended.

A truly shocking display against a better organised team that deserved to win - made the journey down the A14/M11/A120 from darkest Cambridgeshire really enjoyable!! I wonder if CUFC will pay my petrol bill as a thank you for being one of the few in that deserted stadium last night?? 2 points dropped last night and the 2 points dropped when we were leading against Stockport could cost us at the end of the season - the teams just outside the top 6 are getting closer each week and we could find ourselves not even in the play offs, and automatic promotion seems a million miles away. Does anyone have a silver lining to the cloud over WHCS at the moment?

Up the U's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How many of these current players would have got into Parkinson's promotion winning side? Possibly two I reckon - Williams and Tierney. The manager said it all in his post-match interview; that the sky viewers would have turned over to watch Eastenders instead! Yet he picks the players and presumably dictates the style of football used - which i'm afraid to say is aimless hoofball.

I agree above comments, Aidy moans after the game but he picks the starting eleven! We should have started with Lisbie, Vincent and Ifil and take off Platt, Wordsworth and Izzet....and for gods sake Prutton should be in the middle of the park.
Two hard away games so we will see what he does next.........

Oh dear the natives are restless and rightly so. Many aspects to look at, what does the manager see in certain players that the fans obviously don't, is it funds or is there more to it. Lets not bang on about Judas at Norwich, he left a lot of these players, obviously easier to jump ship than sort the problem out? Lets not take too much away from Brighton, they have improved since Gus turned up!

Im not saying to much regards this match. It was obvious in the first half that we had no one wide so there was just the usual bang up the middle. It was like a load of cows in the middle waiting to go to the milking shed. Ive harped on about it so many times and got slated for it , but you do need wide attacking players to open up the play and then get the ball across to your forwards. With Medy and Hackney both loaned out we only have Vincent left as a winger. Surely either of these players must be better than Wordsworth. We have a terrific choice of Lisbie,Oko,Gilly, and Platt up front but they do need a service to have any chance of scoring goals. Please Aidy it needs sorting now rather than later.

Looking on the bright side, I found it very easy to purchase my pre-match pie and pint because there were so few people there....does that count as a silver lining?

One of the worst displays ever, and Brighton deserved to win. An empty stadium will never be filled until the quality of football improves. Any chance of passing the ball occassionaly .Also came on the day I had a copy of the prices for next season , if miracles do happen and we get promoted the cost of a ticket in the family enclosure for a grade A game will rise from £20 to £29. 45%. I know the money is needed to sustain a championship side but with the standard of football I certainly could no longer justify going as often as I do now. Off to see Arsenal next week. £35 family enclosure ..I think £6 extra may buy me a little more quality

Watched on Sky-thought both teams had positive points & your still high in the table, so stop moaning about them & the manager. Get behind the U's, Leeds aren't playing well & could easily be caught, you just have to believe, since Gus has taken over at Brighton, our fans are!

I was at the game and agree it was rubbish especially in the first half, I thought Williams, Tierney, White and Prutton had good games, trouble was the rest didn't really turn up, Magnus and Heath defend ok and then hoof it, unlike Rio. Tierney will be snapped up by a big cub in the summer for sure.

Freedom of speech.
If i put that work rate in that the players did last night then i would be sacked from my company.
First lets look at the game from tv side of things, its not nationwide its F**king international have they not got a clue?.
Second the teamwork/rate is terrible, i watched Aidy last night as i kind of lost interest, okay he picks and puts the team out, but he is on the line all throughout the match shouting and jumping about, Gus on the other hand was sat down letting his team carry out there job, which i must say they did do well, us on the other hand looked like a bunch of chickens or cows as crazy said, shuffling about doing nothing.
And to top it off Izzet was on tv last night talking about being a manger after his football career and having his donkey of the year award shown on national tv what a c**k, if he cant help motivate 10 people on a pitch that are near promotion, how could he manager a football club what a total donkey.
What are the subs upto at halftime playing keepy F**king uppy work on some shooting skills and cousins get in goal no wonder your all on the bench. Also (Sorry) where are the coaches they should be out there warming up/motivating the subs at half time come on sort this mess out. I could go on but i cant be bothered, it must be catching,
Does anyone know if eddie could sign!. Come on Col U, keep the faith my fellow Col U Fans.

The u's played only as good as Brighton allowed them to, Brighton are no mugs, they have taken some good scalps already this season. Lets be realistic Col U probibly wont achieve automatic promotion this term, it will be a fabulous achievement to reach the play off's, even then I think we would struggle to maintain championship league status with our current fan base. I've been a Col U fan for many years, and I have to say these last few seasons have been the most successful in my memory, and I for one will never stop cheering my football club. Up the U's.

I support my football club, but there comes a point when the players need to play, and earn there place, i dont earn money to p*ss away on this sort of thing, its silly schoolboy football, trap the ball or use your chest dont head the ball or kick it out in the stands, control it,i could play better them most of those players in fact all except goal i didnt like being in goal. We have a good team but they have a major lack in self awareness, confidence and taking control of a situation, for example that quick free kick woody took should he of waited or should the two up front be ready and looking for it, this should be there first focus the BALL, their not shopping or playing golf, then take the goalkeeper he should receive the ball and get it out, most times marc is always runing for it but no awareness from the goalkeeper then its too late and he hoofs it up and we lose it. Silly silly little things. Bring in earn as you play that will change it and if they lose fans get there money back.

I dont blame the players for everything that happened last night. Aidy picks the team and tactics we are going to play. Every team now knows how we are going to play. At the start when Aidy first came no one would know how we would play, but now its common knowledge. You need a pattern of play but we have no system whatsoever. Gilly is a player that runs into open spaces so to pull the defender out but no one reads his ploy because there is no understanding between players. Why the hell last night Wordsworth was allowed to take every corner or freekick god only knows. With the big men at corners , Platt Magnus,Heath and Odejay we shoud get a hatfull of goals but the corners are so bad I could honestly hand on heart take better ones myself. All the skillfull ball players like Fox, Hackney are not wanted. Even David Perkins was better than some that are playing now. Last night the corners we had were just played straight into the goalkeepers hands. Finally regards support. I watched Mondays nights local foootball programme on BBC. Why is it Milton Keynes can allow kids in for a £1 and adults on a family fun day. As they mentioned on TV if you can get kids in at 8 yrs old its most likely they will support there team for life. They had over 14,000 people. I was 8 myself when i went to my first game at layer road and have now been a U's supporter for the last 55 years.

We all need to look at the facts that we are a club who week in week out can't even fill half of our stadium when were sitting 4th in the league! when at the start of the season we should be offering lower prices to help existing supporters and bring in the future fans, but again we fall short.
Just look at Monday night at half time the substitutes warming up, all together in a circle being colu flatley's in the centre circle, when they should have had Cousin's in the goal, Lisbie, Vincent, Ifil and Gillespie running and shooting i.e. in match mode with Batth defending! so when Aidy made the call they were fully warmed up and had their shooting boots on, but oh no when they get the call they have just been sodding around and during the game produce nothing!!
If we want to be a 'stable Championship club' we need to start being more professional all round.
