The talented potential of young Colchester archer Edward Kearse has been recognised at the 2008 Essex Sport Awards.

Kearse won in the Olympic Hopeful category at the prestigious ceremony after judges marked him out as one of the county’s top young sporting stars who could feature at the London Games in 2012.

It is a huge accolade for the 15-year-old, who has surpassed all expectations in the past year.

His achievements included two appearances for England, at the Home Nations indoor tournament last December, when he took fifth place overall, and also at the 39th FITA tournament in Malta in March, when he achieved third place in the cadet category.

Edward’s father Paul Kearse said: “We are very proud of him and he is very pleased.

“He has done very well this year and, working with his coach, has climbed the rankings.

“His hard work has seen him add a number of points on to his totals at competitions during the year.

“His maturity is starting to show as well.

“His coach (Roger Hatton from the Grand National Archery Society – GNAS) believes he can be at the London Olympics with his determination and hard work and also with help from GNAS.

“It is his ultimate aim and he is looking to get into the squad as much as he can to prove his case.

“We have been very selective with his competitions this year because one, it is his GCSE year and he needs to concentrate on that, but also he needs to be proving himself against the top archers who will also be getting ready for 2012.”
