Drey Wright says he hopes to stay at Colchester United next season, after resuming talks about his future last week.

The former U’s academy product, who made his first-team debut back in 2012, was offered a new contract by the club last August but is yet to sign the new terms.

Wright, 22, signed a new deal with Colchester last summer and says he is now talking with the club about extending his stay at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

He said: “I had a talk with the staff earlier in the week about those kind of things and hopefully, they should sort themselves out in the near future.

“It has to be right for both parties but I’m hoping I can be part of things at Colchester, next season.”

Wright admits a lack of cutting edge once again proved costly for Colchester following their disappointing 1-0 home loss at the hands of Yeovil Town.

He conceded the U’s are lacking an end product, after they failed to score and were beaten for the second successive home game.

Colchester have managed just one goal in their last four matches in League Two and Wright says that has proved damaging.

He said: “It was a game we felt we would take three points and we haven’t.

“We started really well and I thought we pretty much dominated throughout.

“But we conceded a poor goal and we didn’t do enough to test their goalkeeper or make enough chances to get the three points.

“We dominated the ball in the first half and got into their final third a lot but it was just that end product that we lacked, which we have for a few games now.

“Everyone was trying to get us the opportunities and score the goals to try and get us back into the game but it wasn’t there.

“They were difficult to break down but we had a lot of corners and we’re very disappointed we didn’t score.

“The performance was OK – it wasn’t as bad as it has been at home recently but that’s not good enough at this stage of the season and we didn’t pick up any points.

“Not so long ago, we put in one of our best performances of the season at home against Coventry but it’s just been a difficult few weeks for us.

“We have to go into the Morecambe game looking to right the wrongs of (Yeovil).

“We’ve only taken one point from a possible 12 in our last four games and we need a big turnaround quickly if we’re to get where we want to be.

“We’ve still got nine games to go and we’ll be going into each game trying to pick up the maximum amount of points as possible.”

Wright admits there was a “bit of a mix-up” over who would take Colchester’s eighth-minute penalty against Yeovil, with both Sammie Szmodics and Kurtis Guthrie wanting to take the spot-kick.

Szmodics eventually stepped up but saw his effort saved by Glovers keeper Stuart Nelson from 12 yards and the visitors struck their winner soon after through Alex Fisher.

“There was a bit of a mix-up there, because Kurtis was taking penalties before his injury but he’s been out for a long time and Szmods has come in and scored penalties since then, so he took it,” said Wright.

“People miss penalties but you still get on with it and we still had a lot of the ball.

“At the end of the game, it’s massive but at the time it’s nothing.”

Wright was arguably Colchester’s best player on a frustrating day for the home side, with the versatile attacker deployed in a left wing-back position.

He said: “I thought I did OK but I couldn’t affect it in terms of getting a goal or an assist.

“The more times you play in a position, the more accustomed you become to it.

“I’m just happy to be playing games after a long time out a few years ago and if I get picked to play in any position, I’m happy to do it.”
