REG Allen claimed a countback victory in the Vets’ Jack Hall Trophy at Colchester Golf Club.

He pipped Barry Haley (12) and Robert Potter (16) in the last Vets competition of the year, after all three players returned 37 points.

Allen’s round from his twenty-four handicap proved enough in the Trophy, where 71 members battled for honours.

Roger Robertson (8), Paul Lock (23), Kevin Prince (14) and David Kemble (18) all carded 36 points.

The ubiquitous secretary of the section, Clive Kerr was elected as the Vets Captain for 2018 along with his committee during the following lunch, presided over by John Champ.

In his summary of the year, Champ advised that of the 28 home and away friendly matches played they had won just nine in 2017, with four being halved.

The internal knockout competitions were won by Tom Rothery and Tony Jordan in the pairs, Reg Allen in the singles and Michael Kettle in the best of four from eight.

The inaugural Anniversary Trophy was won by Champ.

Colchester's juniors competed in the final stages of the Royal British Legion Challenge at the neutral course of Staverton Park.

They eased through the semi-final against Weymouth by four holes to take on a team from Bondhay in the final.

Colchester’s first pairing of Cai James and Dan Nicholls, both playing off three, were giving 29 shots to their opponents. Colchester took an early lead but were beaten by four holes, losing out to two nett eagles and seven nett birdies.

It was a closer result in the second pairing where Charley Hatley and Max Maynard lost by one hole.

It was an achievement given they were giving 26 shots and watched three nett eagles and several nett birdies sink.

Judith Robertson and Fiona Prentice won Colchester ladies' Daily Mail Foursomes qualifier on countback from Cherie Clarke and Beverley Parker, after both returned 35 points.

Robertson and Prentice will now represent Colchester in the competition, in 2018.
