Colchester United head coach John McGreal has admitted he may be prompted to bring in defensive reinforcements in the wake of Tom Eastman's injury at Accrington Stanley.

The U's are assessing the extent of the defender's ankle knock, which saw him substituted late in the first half of their 3-1 opening-day loss at the Wham Stadium.

Colchester are hopeful that Eastman's injury is not serious and it is not the same ankle he injured last season, which resulted in a six-week lay-off.

But Colchester will still be without captain Luke Prosser for several weeks and with Alex Wynter having left the club last week, they could be left light on defensive options.

McGreal said: “We’ll have to look at what’s happened with Tom, because we don’t know how long we might have lost him for."
