COLCHESTER Golf Club teenager Cai James will round off the international season by representing Wales in their under-16 match against England.

The Philip Morant School pupil will be hoping to finish the year style in the match, which involves two rounds of singles and a foursomes matchplay, at Newport Golf Club.

James, from Lexden, has already represented Wales a number of times and has also shone for the Essex U16 team on numerous occasions.

Essex and team manager Steve Golding have thanked James for his commitment to the game and county golf over the last year, which has seen him involved in a lot of travelling.

James' season started with a weeklong trip to Temple Patrick Golf Club, Belfast, where he represented Wales under-16s in the annual Quad Match against Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands.

He played well, winning four out of a possible six points.

Following a good performance at the Quad match, James was selected as the Welsh representative for the British Junior Open, held at Barassie Golf Club, Troon.

The event is held once every two years and is organised by the R&A to coincide with The Open Championship.

Each country affiliated to the R&A is invited to send one under-16 boy and one girl.

Previous entrants have included Sergio Garcia, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Speith.

More than 160 young golfers attended and the speeches at the Opening Ceremony were given by Ryder Cup captain, Darren Clarke and reigning Open champion, Zack Johnson.

Following the three-day competition all the golfers were guests of the R&A at Royal Troon, watching the professionals.

To complete the golf in July, James competed in the Colchester Golf Club Men’s Championship.

Following 36 holes of close competition he was tied with one other player, resulting in a play-off.

On the third extra hole a birdie ensured he became club champion.
