COLCHESTER United are understood to be running the rule over Inverness Caledonian Thistle defender Danny Devine.

The Daily Gazette understands the Belfast-born centre-back has held provisional talks with the U’s, who are looking to bolster their defensive options for next season.

Former Preston North End youngster Devine is currently out of contract at Caley Thistle.

And although the 23-year-old has been offered a new two-year deal by the managerless Scottish Premiership club, he is yet to put pen to paper.

Devine, who played in Caley Thistle’s Scottish Cup Final triumph over Falkirk last year, has been at the club for the last three years, having been signed by former boss Terry Butcher following a spell at Wrexham in July, 2013.

Having initially struggled to hold down a first-team place at the Scottish club, the Northern Ireland under-21 international was a near-ever present for them last season, making 45 appearances.

Devine, who can also play at full-back, scored in each of Caley Thistle’s final two games of the season against Hamilton and Dundee, which both ended in victories.

Caley Thistle are keen for Devine to agree to a new deal after his one-year contract expired but Colchester could be ready to step in and snap him up, as they look to add to their squad for their forthcoming League Two campaign.

U’s director of football Tony Humes did not comment on the Devine link but confirmed the club have been in talks with potential signings.

Humes told the Daily Gazette: “We’re just talking to players at the moment.

“It’s still early on in the summer and most of the players who are in demand are just listening to what offers are around at the moment.

“It would be good to get things sorted early on so that John (McGreal) can get things in place for next season.

“But it’s still early days and the season has only just finished for most teams.

“There are so many players available and it’s about making the right decisions.”
