DELIGHTED Frinton Cricket Club skipper Kyran Young believes team spirit is proving a key factor in his side's Gibbs Denley East Anglian Premier League success.

The Ashlyns Road side are fourth in the table after posting their second win on Saturday, easing to a 104-run success at Burwell.

Young himself played a starring role, smashing 91.

Young Harry Nightingale then dominated during an inspired display with the ball, returning five for 24.

Mervyn Westfield had earlier ripped through Burwell's top order with four for 33.

"The boys are really enjoying their cricket and being part of this team," said Australian Young.

"It's really showing on the field.

"Last season, Harry Nightingale was playing in division six of the Two Counties Championship and look at him now, shining in the East Anglian Premier League.

"Hopefully the word is now getting out that Frinton are the club that can offer youngsters opportunities to push on with their cricket."

Having lost the toss at Mingay Park, Young’s team were asked to bat in overcast conditions.

Openers Mike Griggs and Murray Commins looked settled with a 48-run partnership until Burwell seamers Ali Allchin and Graham Hume found their length.

Allchin bowled Commins for 29 while Hume bowled David Brent for one.

Griggs followed to the pavilion, having been caught behind for 24.

Young arrived to steady a creaking ship, while the ball continued to seam wildly.

Mervyn Westfield (12) and Matt Foakes (0) were defeated by unplayable deliveries and Frinton looked in big trouble at 81 for five.

Calm heads were needed and fortunately John Hambrook was the right man for the job.

While Young proceeded to turn the game on its head from his end, Hambrook provided support from the other in a 67-run sixth-wicket partnership.

Hambrook was unluckily run out for 27 while the skipper fell just short of his century with a hard-fought 91.

Wicket-keeper Tom Benn held his bat for 14 while the Frinton tail were quickly mopped up, with the visitors all out for 212.

With neither team sure if this was a winning total, it fell to Westfield to show just how seam-friendly the conditions were. Finding his length quicker than the Burwell opening pair, he ran riot through the top order and, with Dan Carter contributing with a wicket, the home team were on their knees at 15 for five.

With a Minor Counties game the following day, Westfield showed no signs of taking things easy and finished with figures of four for 33 from his 13 overs.

Young then turned to 16-year-old spinner Nightingale, who broke the partnership of Hume (30) and Ed Fletcher (46) and then finished off the Burwell tail with match-winning figures of five for 24.

Meanwhile, at Ashlyns Road, Frinton’s second team recorded a good home win against Worlington.

The visitors made 160 all out with good bowling performances from Frinton’s Joey McDevitt (two for 22) and Sam Brynes (three for 36).

Lewis Catlow’s team chased this down with four wickets to spare, with runs for McDevitt (54), Russ Stockdale (38) and Joe Fowler (27).

Both teams move to fourth position in their respective leagues.
