A LARGE field battled it out as Playgolf Colchester held the second of six Club Championship medal-qualifying rounds.

Sam Bollen returned to form in division one, winning with his gross 80 (nett 71).

He was closely followed by Mark Easterbrook (six), who carded the lowest gross with his 76 (nett 72).

Cord Plasse (nine) took third place on countback from Jon Bailey (seven) with his superior back nine score, when both carded nett 73.

Playgolf club captain Richard Frost (17) earned a two shot handicap cut by putting in the lowest gross in division two, with a superb gross 80 (nett 63).

His card was built on eight pars and highlighted with a par-three birdie coming on on the tricky fifth hole.

Frost followed that up with a nerve-shredding birdie putt on the par four final hole.

Peter Quilty (19) also earned a shot handicap cut, finishing five-under par (nett 65) two ahead of vice-captain Michael Rolfe (18) with his nett 67.

Gary Mcllwaine (24) carded a nett 73 to win division three on countback from Michael Johnson (22).

Countback was also needed to separate third-placed Brian Williams (23) and John MacDonald, after both carded nett 79.

Course conditions could not have been better for Playgolf Colchester's seniors stableford competition.

Division one saw good scoring from winner Peter Saye, who carded 39 points ahead of runner-up William Elder (36 points).

Steve Turner was third with 35 points.

Stanley Knights won division two with 35 points, ahead of runner-up Robert Few (32 points) and Patrick Driver (31 points).
