Will Norris is set to miss Braintree Town’s Vanarama National League clash with Torquay United today with a knee injury.

The Iron keeper, who is on a season-long loan from League Two side Cambridge United, suffered a gash to his knee in training ahead of Braintree’s scheduled game against Kidderminster Harriers last weekend.

Manager Danny Cowley moved quickly to bring in another loan player – Alex Lynch from Wycombe Wanderers – as cover for Norris and while the Cambridge player’s injury isn’t as bad as first feared, the Iron boss said he would miss this weekend’s clash at the Avanti Stadium.

Cowley said: “We needed to react quickly after we got the news about Will and we brought in Alex.

“He’s a young keeper but he’s got some good experience and was Wycombe’s keeper in the League Two play-off semi-final and final last year.

Gazette:

“Will opened up his knee in training on the Friday lunchtime before the Kidderminster game.

“It’s not as bad as we first feared, but he wouldn’t have been ready for Saturday.

“Alex is a player we know about and we have a good relationship with (Wycombe manager) Gareth Ainsworth so we agreed a deal to bring him in.

“We have Chris Haigh at the club as a keeper and he has been building good experience in and around the first-team squad, but putting him in a starting role may have been tough at this point.

“We’ll probably look to get him out on loan to get him more experience, but we brought Alex in and he’s with us now for a month.

“He’ll come in on Saturday as even though Will’s injury isn’t as bad as we first thought, he is still doubtful for the game against Torquay.”

Cowley added that the nature of Norris’ problem meant that it was likely to be a short-term absence for him from the team and that was why he hadn’t recalled Nathan McDonald from his loan at Ryman League premier division side Enfield Town.

Former England C keeper McDonald is with Enfield, who are managed by Braintree record appearance holder Brad Quinton, on a season-long deal, but the Iron do have a recall facility if they require him back.

However, Cowley said, on this occasion, he had taken the decision to allow McDonald to stay with Enfield for the time being.

He added: “We could have brought Nathan back, but we realised it was probably going to be a short-term thing (with Norris) and we didn’t want to disrupt his loan.

“That wouldn’t have been fair to either Nathan or Enfield.

“However, had Will’s injury been more serious then we would have looked to have brought Nathan back.”
