BILL Shelley and Leon Griffiths emerged victorious in the annual Confusion Trophy, held at Maldon Golf Club.

Twenty-eight pairs competed in the testing stableford-based format, whereby holes one to six are played as foursomes, holes seven to 12 as greensomes and holes 13 to 18 as betterball.

Add to this the customary shot-gun start and all players need to keep their wits about them as to what format they are playing and when to change.

On a gloriously sunny, autumn morning there were some excellent scores, with Shelley and Griffiths victorious on 42 points.

Second place went to Darren and Billy Mason on 40 points.

Steve Drake and Paul Jackson were third with 38 points and there was a countback for fourth and fifth on 37 points, with brothers Chris and Dave Purkiss just edging out John Dormon and Nick Shakespeare.

The nearest the pin prizes went to Ed Bishop and Mark Beckwith.

Maldon Golf Club ladies held their Autumn Meeting on September 29.

The weather was again kind and 11 ladies played in lovely autumn sunshine.

Afterwards the competitors were joined by the retired, non-playing ladies for lunch in the clubhouse.

The winner on the day was Val Rayner, with Sue Gardiner second and Mary King third.

The prizes for the best front and back nine went to Jenny Chamberlain and Laura Reilly respectively.

The men’s October stableford was won by Alan Syrett with 37 points, on countback, from Andy West.

Third place went to Bill Guthrie with 33.
