IT was ladies all the way at Colchester Golf Club.

Beverley Parker crushed the opposition in a stableford competition by six points.

And Maureen Devenish returned 41 points to win the Angel Cup, beating a mixed field of 150 members, with the second and third places also taken up by ladies.

Parker has been there or thereabouts in most recent competitions and through regular play her handicap has slowly been trying to catch up with her ability, now it has.

Playing off 23 in this competition, she is now down to 19.

Devenish’s achievement in winning the Angel Cup was equally stunning.

Returning 42 points on a course set out to be as quirky as possible, her scoring was a reflection of the hard work she has put into her golf in recent months.

There were 150 members, playing in two shotgun starts, making this the largest field of the year.

Devenish’s first place with 42 points was not clear of the field as Jan Murray (27) was breathing down her neck with 41 points and Barbara Hemmings (31) hot on their heels with 40 points.

The first man past the post was Steve Jennings, who took fourth place from John Logan after a countback, both returning 39 points.

Lorrie Austin and Nesta James won the longest drives and Paul Nunny, Tim Logan and David Stones scooped nearest the pins.

After the competition Kevin Carpenter, a former junior at the club and now professional at Hintlesham Hall, returned to give members another fine exhibition of his Golf Trick Shot Show.

The day was organised as a thank you to Angel for the 24 years he has been at Colchester Golf Club and concluded with speeches of appreciation for his important contribution to club.

More than £9,000 was raised for his benefit by generous members.

The ladies’ Silver Shield team won the final match in their league against Chigwell 4-3.

Colchester’s Cassie Cunningham was first out in a tight match against Megan Henry. They were all square on the 18th but Henry won the game.

Both Mandy Rix and Louisa Storey both went down the 19th being all square after the 18 holes.

Unfortunately Rix could not get the win but Storey played a textbook hole, while her playing partner, Anna Wells, sliced her second shot on to the adjacent fairway and found it difficult to get back, ending up in the greenside bunker.

Storey, meanwhile, was on the green for three and Wells conceded the hole.

Cathy Burchell had an excellent 6&5 win against Barbara Watkins, and Helen Tartellin won 5&4 against Fiona Juby.

Colchester now have to wait until the Chelmsford matches are completed before knowing whether they go through to the final.

Sunday saw a men’s stableford which James Cooke won with 41 points from his 16 handicap.

Chris Doyle (13) returned 39 for second place.

With four players all on 38 points a countback was needed.

Third place went to Glenn Sibbons (10), Dave Blackmore (10) was fourth with Geoff Lawrenson (14) fifth.

In sixth spot was Tim Rogers, playing off ten handicap.
