COLCHESTER Golf Club’s lady captain’s team were victorious at Brett Vale GC.

They scored 87 points to win the Lady Captain’s Away Day, which saw 55 ladies in teams of four do battle in very cold conditions.

The two best scores counted, with the team of Fiona Prentice, Bridget Whitworth, Alison Clare and Gill Crayston victorious with 87 points.

Crayston, playing off 32, registered four pars.

Two points behind in second place were the lady vice-captain’s team of Sheila Dornan, Maureen Devenish, Linda Freeman and Cherie Clark.

The team of Bev Parker, Marilyn Free, Sharon Manby and Catherine Chick were third, with 84 points.

Ian Parry and Joe Storey teamed up to win the Foursomes Cup, played in a bogey format against the par of the course.

They were the only pair to beat their handicap, as they posted a +1 score.

Their front nine was steady, mixing three wins with two losses before a run of three wins in five holes on the back nine got them to +3.

Although they posted two losses on the tough-finishing holes, their score was more than good enough to take top honours.

Jacob Farson and Richard Withnall were second with -1, while Ben and Joe Williams saw off a host of other pairs to finish third on -2.

Steve Bozier returned a nett 66 to win the Centenary Medal.

Bozier (12) reached the turn in two over par and despite a run of bogeys on the back nine, he finished well to win the medal for best nett score.

Scott Vass had led for a long time after posting an excellent nett 68 in the first group out but was pipped by Bozier.

James Cooke was third ahead on countback, after several players all posted a nett 71 in difficult conditions.

In the Scratch Medal event, Alan Sharrocks (3) triumphed by one shot from Jonathan Gilbert (6).

Sharrocks’ 76 just beat Gilbert’s 77, posted from the last group of the day.

Colchester GC’s ladies held their Ping Fourball Betterball qualifying event, with Marilyn Wood and Nerys Horrocks winning with 38 points.

They have progressed to the tournament final, to be held at Stoke by Nayland GC in September. Sara Cock and Anne Salmon were runners-up with 36 points, while Penny Fairs and Daphne Bloomfield were a point behind in third.
