A large field turned out to play in the Golf Foundation Trophy at Five Lakes.

Played on the championship Lakes course, off the medal tees, there was some competitive scoring from the players in Saturday’s competition.

Two players returned nett 73s, Phil Robson (9) and Jack Garnett (4).

Ash Patel (22) chimed in with a nett 71 to be just outside the main prizes.

Third place went to Matt Foot (5), also with a nett 71 on countback, also claiming the scratch prize with a gross 76. Second slot went to Gary Trim (18) with a nett 70.

However the 2015 winner of the Golf Foundation Trophy was Dave Chignell (13) with a very competitive nett 68.

Both first and second positioned players will now play with a reduced handicap.

Birdie/Eagle balls were won by Jack Garnett and Malcolm Pitt on the fourth, Gary Trim and Pat McSweeney on the long 16th and Billy Coe won balls with an eagle on the par-five 12th hole.

In chilly but cheerful weather, 27 seniors contested the Seniors Curry Cup played on the Lakes course.

The Cup, dedicated to past member of Five Lakes, Bob Curry, is played as an individual Stableford qualifier but with a blind draw for pairs at the end.

As players do not know their partner until after the competition, it is important to return good scores.

The winner is the pair with the highest aggregate stableford points.

The unusual competition format allows a player returning only a moderate score to be successful if he draws a favourable partner.

The individual stableford competition was won by Peter Gee with 40 points, ahead of seniors vice-captain David Barbour and Clive Jenner both with 36 points.

Drawn pairs’ results: 1 Seniors Captain Richard Taylor and David Barbour 67 pts, 2 Peter Gee and Ron Dent 65 pts, 3 Barry Painter and Steve Green 62 pts, 4 Mike Martin and Brian Day 59 pts, 5 Tony Horne and Graham Morris 59 pts.
