THERE is still plenty to play for as Colchester Golf Club’s winter leagues draw to a conclusion this weekend.

The top two pairs from each of the eight leagues will progress to the knockout stages.

That will bring to an end the first stage of the competition, which started last October.

With almost 120 members competing and 16 pairs moving into the knockout stages, it has been a very competitive competition.

Only three pairs stayed undefeated in all of their matches.

League One pair Mike Potter and Lorrie Austin have already secured the maximum 14 points.

Dean Hughes and Julian Munson qualified in second place from that league with ten points, with a match to spare.

Bill Eke and Stuart Reed from League Seven also have an unblemished record.

David Latta and Mike Sutton do battle with Duncan Steward and David Harper this weekend, for the league’s second qualifying spot.

And depending on that result, Dick Bokenham and Tim Rogers might just pip them both to second spot.

Lionel Keightley and Keith Newnham are the third unbeaten pair.

They have comfortably qualified from League Eight, along with Kevin Prince and Hilary Percent.

In League Two, David Humberstone and Reg Allen have to fight for second place against Joe and Ben Williams, after Tim and Patrick Logan finished first.

League Three has already been decided, with Chris Doyle and Andrew Patrick going through with Mark and Harry Hills.

In League Four, Shaun Holmes and Steve Cullis qualified on ten points, along with Mike Lapham and Graham Baxter (eight points).

John Redden and Bob Tebby progressed from League Five as winners.

But Colin Gathercole and Mike Withers and John Blackmore and Stuart Watson will battle it out for second place.

Ian Devenish and Jim Wilkinson have qualified from League Six, along with Les Daughtrey and Peter Robinson.

The first-round clash between Keightly/Newnham and Persent/Prince is a mouth-watering prospect.

The respective pairs have lost just one of their combined matches in the opening stage of the competition.
