Manager or no manager, Maldon Town boss Russell Tanner is expecting nothing less than a mighty close clash at Enfield Town in Ryman League Division one north tomorrow.

Tanner told the Gazette he understands Enfield have just parted company with their manager, which was not expected with their position among the play-off hopefuls, along with Maldon.

And Tanner expects there to be very little between the teams.

He said: "We are one of the better teams in this league and while it is very close in the play-off mix, there are a couple of sides who are better than the others.

"It is down to us, though. In the last 14 games of the season we have to put a nice run together."

Maldon beat Great Wakering Rovers on penalties after a 1-1 draw during midweek, with Tanner casting his eye over a number of players on the fringes of his side.

He is without star striker Steve Wareham tomorrow, as the school teacher is away on a half-term skiing trip.

Captain Ollie Blackwell is also a doubt and Tanner said a late decision will be made on him.

There is no concern with where the goals are going to come from in Wareham's absence, as Kevin Hawes is enjoying a hot streak of form.

Tanner said: "I knew him from my time at Witham and he is a player, who on his day, is unbelievable.

"He has proved a great signing for us and whoever he plays upfront with, he will get them going."
