Rovers take points off high-fliers

STANWAY ROVERS did what only one other club has managed in the Ridgeons League premier division this season – took points off Leiston.

The high-flying Suffolk club are many people’s favourites for title honours this season and are enjoying a campaign to remember.

However, reputations stood for nothing to Stanway as they earned a 3-3 draw on the road.

A Rovers side that had been depleted by illness went 1-0 up with a goal by Jermaine Harewood, before falling behind 2-1, but Ed Kirby’s strike pulled things level again.

The hosts went ahead, though at 3-2 and Stanway had to show all their battling qualities to come back once more, with Luke Callander’s strike bringing a valuable point back to the Hawthorns.

Joint manager Rob Bate said: “It was a really pleasing result as we were without a few players through illness and personal reasons.

“So to go there and play against a team that is having a season like they are and more than hold our own is great.

“What was particularly pleasing is that we came back from being behind twice to get the point.

“We are in good form at the moment.”
