COLCHESTER United legend Kem Izzet believes it’s make-or-break time in terms of his former club’s promotion charge.

The U’s are preparing for a crunch showdown against play-off rivals Notts County at the Weston Homes Community Stadium on Saturday.

John McGreal’s men are 11th in the table and fourth points adrift of seventh-placed Coventry City.

The Magpies are fifth - nine points better off - and Izzet has warned that defeat could be “game over” for Colchester.

“This weekend’s game is a massive one, as far as I’m concerned,” said the Stanway Rovers manager.

“Beating Notts County would almost be like a double victory because they’re another side up there in the table.

“Colchester would take three points and, at the same time, stop their opponents adding to their tally.

“They have to show up and be clinical - an area that let them down last weekend, apparently - and for me it’s make or break.

“If they win, they’ll claw back one of their main rivals but if they lose it could be game over.

“I suspect that would be them done.”

Colchester lost 1-0 at home to leaders Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

Prior to that, though, the U’s had reignited their play-off quest with a three straight victories and they were unbeaten in four.

“Colchester seem to have turned a corner and got themselves back in the play-off mix,” added Izzet.

“They’ve got four games left and they’re four points adrift of seventh spot, so they’ve given themselves a chance.

“It’s a tall order but if they can keep winning, they’ll be in with a shout of pushing for that last play-off place.

“They’ll also be in a really strong position, because they would go into the play-offs on a real wave of form, with momentum behind them.”
