WIVENHOE TOWN have promotion in their sights this Easter.

The Dragons need just four more points to confirm a top-three spot and reclaim their place back in the Thurlow Nunn League premier division.

Mo Osman’s side have an enormous 21-point lead over fourth-placed Halstead Town and will be looking to gain the points they need from tomorrow’s match at Diss and Monday’s home showdown with Team Bury.

Wivenhoe already appear to be champions-elect - given that they are 13 points clear of second-placed Great Yarmouth.

And Osman admits that the feeling of sealing promotion will be in marked contrast to his emotions this time last year, when his side were relegated.

“I remember the feeling of going down last season - it’s like one end of the scale to the other,” he said.

“We’ve had five years of misery, so hopefully now it’s come to an end.

“We’ve been down in the dumps, so to now experience the up side is nice.

“We’ll certainly have a good celebration.

“It’s well deserved by everyone at the club and we’ll enjoy it while it lasts, because if we do go up we know it’s going to be tough next year.

“But it’s not just about this year - it’s about building for years to come.

“Hopefully the club can keep growing and I’m sure the momentum we’ve gained this season will be the best preparation we’ve ever had for the premier division.

“In the past we’ve had reprieves and been there undeservedly.

“This year, for the first time, we’ll be up on merit and no-one can argue that we don’t deserve it.”

Wivenhoe had hoped to go through the whole season unbeaten.

However, their proud unblemished record came to an end when they lost 3-2 at home to Braintree Town Reserves, on March 5.

Osman admitted it was a blow to see the run finish - but admitted being delighted with his players’ response in their following matches.

“We didn’t play badly that day - we just defended badly,” he said.

“But to keep winning and not concede goals after that was important.

“It was never something we set out to do and it’s a very hard thing to do, at any level of football.

“Even if we hadn’t lost that one, we might have slipped up somewhere else along the way so in some ways it’s nice to have that pressure off.

“People were talking about it and even if we go through the whole season having lost one or two games it’s still a very big achievement.”
