RECORD-BREAKER Aaron Condon admitted being “overwhelmed” after writing his name in FC Clacton history.

And after becoming the club’s highest-ever goal-scorer, he immediately set himself a fresh double target before the end of the season.

Skipper Condon plundered his 87th FC Clacton goal in Saturday’s 3-0 win at Whitton United – taking him one clear of Matt Waters.

Now he wants to bring up his century before the end of the season – knowing 13 more would also take him level with Sean Hillier as the club’s record scorer in one season. Hillier managed 29 in the promotion-winning 2008/09 campaign.

“It was great to set a new record and a weight off my shoulders,” said Condon, whose first goal for his home-town club came in an FA Cup tie in 2007.

“It’s something I’ve been working towards for quite a while, so to finally get there was a brilliant feeling.

“While the team is always most important, it’s nice to have personal goals and really satisfying to achieve them.

“It’s not every day you break a record, so it’s something I’ve revelled in this week and everyone has been so supportive.

“I couldn’t believe the response on Saturday night.

“It was overwhelming and people were coming up to me and shaking my hand at work on Monday morning.

“People know I’m football-mad but they also know what this means to me and it’s nice that they’ve taken notice.”

Condon, who now has 16 for the season, says his next target is to reach 100 goals – and therefore match Hillier’s haul of 29.

“It’s going to be a big ask to score another 13 goals,” he said.

“But it’s achievable and something I’ll definitely have a crack at.

“In terms of my overall record, I hope the goals keep coming and believe I’ve got another five years or so left in me.

“When I’ve been playing regularly, I’ve generally managed 20 a season.

“I just need to keep working hard and try to be consistent.

“I remember my first goal like it was yesterday.

“It was quite a fortunate one.

“Since then a lot of my goals have been good ones and people don’t seem to associate me with tap-ins, which is flattering.

“That’s the sort of player I am, but it does make me wonder how many goals I could have scored if I did get the simple ones.

“I’d be the first to admit I don’t always make the right decisions – if I had a brain I’d be deadly!”

Waters’ overall tally stands at 107, including his goals for Clacton Town.
