MALDON and Tiptree striker Sam Newson is enjoying his football at Park Drive.

That is despite his side giving up a 4-1 Ryman League division north lead against visiting Tilbury on Saturday.

The Jammers were held to a 4-4 draw as the Dockers fought back for a share of the spoils.

Newson said: “The fans’ got their money’s worth at least.

“It was an exciting game. I think it was 4-2 at half-time but you can’t concede four goals and think that you can win a match. But it is a very young team that is still learning.

“And when we iron out a few things then I think we can push on.”

Newson, who scored twice in Saturday’s match, recently joined the club from Needham Market, where he was finding game time hard to find.

He said: “I am really enjoying my football at the moment.

“It was a disappointing start to the season at Needham regarding playing time.

“I am scoring goals which is good and if I can pass anything on to the younger players in the team then that’s great.

“I am not putting myself forward as a brilliant player.

“However, I have been playing in the Ryman north for a number of years and do know how to play at this level.

“So anything I can pass on, or if they younger players want to ask me any questions, then I can use that experience.

“So I will just carry on what I am doing and lead from the front if I can.”

Looking ahead to this Saturday’s derby with Heybridge Swifts, Newson added: “I am looking forward to the derby game.

“I know some of their players and Heybridge have a great set up.

“The pitch is really good there and I think that will be a help to us because we like to play football.

“There should be a decent crowd and I hop it is another exciting game for the fans but one in which we can come out on top of this time.”
