STANWAY ROVERS boss Angelo Harrop hopes to make two more signings – including another goal-scorer.

The ambitious side have already signed Terry Rymer, from AFC Sudbury, and Ben Newson, from Brightlingsea Regent.

And with their sights firmly set on promotion next year, Harrop plans to pep up his already-strong squad with even more goal-threat next season.

He also hopes to bring another goalkeeper to The Hawthorns.

“I hope to get two more players in,” said Harrop, who guided Rovers to third place – the club’s highest-ever finish – in last season’s Thurlow Nunn League.

“A goalkeeper is my top priority – I need someone I can really rely on for the whole season – and I’d also like to bring in another attacking player.

“In terms of the latter, I have someone in mind and would love to see him up front with Terry and Ben.

“Getting Ben on board last week was a massive boost.

“He works hard and will give us energy and goals.

“He can play out wide or up front, will create goals and is someone who will always score 15 to 20.

“We have high expectations but, for me, it’s a no-risk signing.

“We know what he can do and he’s already proved himself at a higher level, for Heybridge Swifts and Brightlingsea.”

Newson, Rymer and last season’s skipper, Pip Boyland, have all penned year-long contracts at Stanway.

And Harrop believes that show of commitment – from club to player and vice-versa – will be a key ingredient in the club’s quest for promotion.

“It’s a big thing and great for me, because I know I have these players for a year,” he said.

“We can work together to build something special, rather than making a great start and then running the risk of higher-placed clubs sniffing around.

“That would be a nightmare but the club have really backed me, to try and make sure that doesn’t happen.

“They can see we’re turning things round on the pitch and hopefully, having made these signings and got players tied down on contracts, we’ll hit the ground running next season.

“I was really pleased about Pip.

“He was outstanding last season – a typical old-school captain and centre-half who produces nine out of ten performances most weeks and isn’t afraid to tell others when they’re not putting a shift in.”

Harrop says there has been “non-stop” interest in his squad from rival clubs.

So far only Ray Turner and Lee Cullen have parted company, although the club are yet to agree new terms with Adam Hampson.

“There’s been so much interest in my squad,” said Harrop.

“I know they’re capable of playing at a higher level, but for them to want to stay and stick with us is fantastic.”
