BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT boss James Webster expects pivotal pair Amir Berkane and Ollie Canfer to win their fitness battles in time for Saturday’s match at home to Waltham Abbey.

Both have been struggling with knocks and would not have featured in Monday’s postponed Essex Senior Cup quarter-final at Billericay, which will now be played on Monday, January 19.

However, Webster hopes both will be fit to reclaim their midfield places for this weekend’s Ryman League division one north contest at North Road.

And they could soon be joined by a new face at the club.

George Clarke, who started his career on the books at Ipswich Town, alongside Chelmsford City loanee Berkane, is poised to join from Hadleigh United.

The striker is currently nursing a stomach injury but should be fit in the next fortnight.

In the meantime, Webster is keeping his fingers crossed regarding Berkane (hamstring) and Canfer (shin).

“I’m hopeful both will be fine for Saturday,” said the Regent boss, Ryman League division one north’s manager-of-the-month for November.

“They wouldn’t have played on Monday night.

“But they should be fine for the weekend and that would be a big boost, because they’re two very important players. Ollie has made a massive difference since coming in, as a goal-scoring midfielder.

“He’s been outstanding and a real revelation.

“So too has Amir, who we believe is being watched by Football League scouts (along with striker Jordan Heath).

“I’m sure he’ll get back into the pro game and believe he’s as good as any midfielder in this league.

“He plays the game properly, is reliable, has a great work-ethic and rarely gives the ball away.”

Meanwhile, Webster is confident of adding former Ipswich academy striker Clarke to his Regent squad.

He started the season at Needham Market but has since joined Hadleigh United.

However, he is keen to step up to the Ryman League and the proposed move came about due to his friendship with former team-mate Berkane.
