Braintree Town boss Devonshire would like to prolong Strutton's stay at the Iron
8:00am Saturday 12th October 2013 in Non-league football
BRAINTREE Town manager Alan Devonshire would welcome the opportunity to prolong Charlie Strutton’s stay at the Iron.
The 24-year-old striker has proved an important addition since joining on a month’s loan from League Two side AFC Wimbledon and has scored four goals in five league games.
The most recent of those was the opening strike in the Iron’s 3-2 defeat by Welling United in midweek, which ended a four-game winning run. The penultimate game of Strutton’s loan spell is due to come today when Braintree head to Nuneaton in the league and, with Sean Marks still coming back to fitness after a groin strain, Devonshire would like to hold on to the Dons loanee. However, he respects that the decision on that lies with Wimbledon and is hoping to speak with Dons boss Neal Ardley about the situation this week.
Devonshire said: “Charlie has done well and he is enjoying his spell here. “He isn’t fully fit yet, but he has only played a few games for us and I hope he will get fitter. “Whether we can keep him longer is up to Wimbledon of course, though. “He is their player and it will be up to them if they want him back at their club. “It’s out of our hands, but we’ll look at it with Wimbledon when Charlie’s loan expires on October 19.
“We would like to take him again on loan, but he is Wimbledon’s player and it will be their call at the end of the day.” Midfielder James Mulley will have his fitness assessed ahead of the trip to Nuneaton after taking a blow to his leg during Braintree’s defeat by Welling on Tuesday, while skipper Kenny Davis is hoping to be back after missing the last three games with a hamstring problem. Full-back Ryan Peters’ Achilles problem, midfielder Luke Daley’s ankle and Marks’ groin injury will also all be looked at ahead of the trip to Nuneaton.
