A Benfleet sports club is hoping to bowl the maidens over with the game of cricket.
Benfleet Cricket Club set up a ladies’ section last year and the team will be entering the Beuamont Seymour Essex League in 2012.
The club has 18 regular players but manager Karen Brady would like to bolster the squad with some new faces.
“We are entered into a league at the Graham Gooch Centre in Chelmsford and have played a couple of friendlies with Benfleet’s Under-13 boys,” said Brady.
“We have also had an Essex ladies coach coming in to train us but we would really like to attract some new members.”
Brady, who took over running the team in September, said there were plans for training sessions at Benfleet’s Appleton School between March and May, but the club would need 10 girls aged between 14 and 16 for it to be feasible.
Benfleet ladies are currently training on Monday nights at King John School in Thundersley between 7pm and 8pm and recently made their inuagural player presentations.
Sally Huntley took the batswoman of the year honours, with Lisa Earle taking the bowler of the year accolade. The most improved player title went to Lesley Pryce.
Benfleet are set to join Rayleigh Ladies as the only south Essex members of the Beaumont Seymour league in 2012.
