Essex confirm they are trying to sign New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori

Essex County Cricket Club have confirmed they have held talks with New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori.

Essex are seeking an overseas replacement for Pakistani leg-spinner Danish Kaneria who is only expected to be available for the first three months of the season.

However, Vettori is currently scheduled to be playing in an international triangular tournament this summer.

Essex coach Paul Grayson said: "I am talking with agents all the time and I have spoken to Daniel over the phone about coming over but it depends on his involvement in this triangular series, he would be a top signing but I have spoken to lots of guys."
