TOM Westley believes his most testing winter yet will set him up nicely for another successful summer with Essex.

The 26-year-old batsman flew out to Dubai with England Lions yesterday ahead of their five match 50 overs series against Pakistan A.

And Westley, who also lined up in the T20 clashes in December, is certain the contests will enable him to keep on shining in county cricket.

“It’s been a brilliant winter for me and a really beneficial one too,” said Westley.

“I enjoyed the T20 tour against Pakistan and scored a lot of runs in the warm up games we had.

“Sadly I couldn’t carry that form into the actual matches but that’s the nature of Twenty20 matches.

“I was delighted to have been called up for the 50 over games and you’ve got a bit more time to convert a good start into a good score.

“That’s what I’ll be aiming to do and it’s a great way to start the new year.

“I’ll be playing against some world class players and it will definitely help me for the season ahead with Essex too.”

The first match with Pakistan A takes place on Wednesday, January 20.

And Westley is looking forward to testing himself against more top bowlers.

“Every winter for the past few seasons I’ve been able to step up the standard of the opposition and it’s always put me in good stead,” said Westley.

“This time I’m only one level below full international cricket so it’s going to be a real test and I’m looking forward to it.”

After the series comes to an end, Westley will be heading back to team up with a new look Essex side.

Chris Silverwood has replaced Paul Grayson as head coach while a new captain will also soon be appointed And Westley revealed Silverwood is desperate to succeed this term.

“I’ve spoken to Chris and he’s someone I already have a good relationship with because he’s been here a while now,” said Westley.

“He’s already signed a new bowler and Chris wants success straight away.

“He doesn’t want to ease us into things and for there to be a transition period.

“He wants us to be winning immediately and I think it’s an exciting time for the club.”
