ESSEX trail Glamorgan by 131 runs after a rain-interrupted second day of their county championship match.

The visitors are 183-4 at the close of play, with Ryan ten Doeschate unbeaten on 38 and 17-year-old debutant Callum Taylor on 23 not out.

Taylor grew into his innings but some composed shots at the close saw him look at ease on his first-class debut having seen another 17-year-old, Dan Lawrence take to the crease earlier in the day.

Glamorgan had added 127 runs to their overnight total in the morning session to be bowled out for 314.

Openers Nick Browne and Jaik Mickleburgh carried their partnership to 54 in 18 overs before David Lloyd struck with two wickets in three deliveries.

Mickleburgh edged to Jacques Rudolph at slip for 19 runs and in his next over, the bowler brought Browne (31) forward and found the edge to give Mark Wallace a uniform catch.

A further shower saw play suspended again with Essex 63 for 2 and after the loss of 12 further overs, resumption was made at 5pm.

Craig Meschede struck when Lawrence, on 10, flirted with a delivery outside off stump and was well caught by wicket-keeper Wallace to leave Essex 86-3.

James Foster was joined by ten Doeschate in a partnership worth 54 but the skipper fell for 38 when Graham Wagg breached his defences with a ball that kept low.

That allowed Taylor his first test with the bat in first-class cricket, and he looked impressive before bad light ended play.

David Masters was the pick of the Essex bowlers earlier in the day, taking three wickets for 3-51 Graham Napier ended with 3-84.

Play resumes tomorrow.
