Fisher takes seven wickets as Colchester are up to third

Colchester and East Essex are up to third in the premier division after a crushing victory over Upminster.

It was a match to remember for left-arm opening bowler Gareth Fisher, who recorded his best premier division bowling figures of 7-47 from 18 overs.

It was a monumental effort by young Fisher, who finally appears to be fulfilling his promise this season.

Joe Austin took two wickets and Alex Young the other to fall, as Upminster were bowled out for 160.

They came up against Fisher once again when he opened the Colchester innings, but his stay was shortlived as he was dismissed for eight.

Austin’s 59 and Omar Ahmed’s 24 helped Colchester to a three-wicket victory.

The result leaves Colchester in an excellent position in the table.

They are just four points off second placed Chelmsford and could leapfrog them this coming weekend.

However, Brentwood look unlikely to be caught at the top.

Colchester’s second XI drew with Wickford, with Dhruva Bhaskar scoring a century Colchester posted 249 for 2 declared, as Bhaskar received support from Simon Gilhooly (44) and Lorrie Austin (42 not out).

Malcolm Edwards took four wickets and Rakesh Krishnan three as Wickford could only muster 214 for 8.
