WIVENHOE Town Cricket Club's past and present players will be on show when the club holds its cricket week.

A Wivenhoe old boys side will take on a team of current players when the club throws open its pavilion doors to the local community next Wednesday (July 27).

That will be followed by an evening under-16 Twenty20 match, a BBQ and live music.

It is part of a nationwide initiative backed by Waitrose and the England Cricket Board, to boost grassroots cricket.

On the pitch, a Wivenhoe old boys side will take on a team of current players, followed by an evening under-16 T20 match, a BBQ and live music.

Wivenhoe Town CC chairman Ian Endean said: “We have a fantastic week planned – one for all the family, not just cricketers.

"We’d love people top just pop down and enjoy the fun.”

Wivenhoe Town CC kicks off its cricket week with a family music festival at its Rectory Road ground on Sunday, July 24 with live music from local favourites, Helen Connolly, Loaded Dice and Strings Attached.

There will also be a bouncy castle, a BBQ, beer and Prosecco tent, along with other stalls.

Under 14s go free and it starts at 1pm.

Wivenhoe's famous President’s Day marquee lunch will round off the week on Saturday, July 30.

Wivenhoe Town run four senior sides, with the first team playing in Two Counties League division one.

The club also runs a busy colts section, with more than 100 youngsters aged between five and 14 years old training twice a week.

This includes ‘family Friday’ when children play Kwik Cricket and the parents come to watch and enjoy an end-of-the week drink.

Endean added: “Our colts section is key to the club’s continued success – several of today’s senior players picked up their first bat playing kwik cricket on a summer’s evening at the club.”

Under-14s go free at the music festival with adult tickets priced at £5.

Tickets are on sale from Wivenhoe Cricket Club, Horse & Groom and the Premier store in Wivenhoe.
