Kinsella urges U's to keep their standards high

Mark Kinsella has urged Colchester United’s players to continue their winning ways after helping them to back-to-back victories.

Kinsella, who enjoyed seven seasons at the U’s as a player, has returned to the club as assistant manager to new boss Joe Dunne.

The pair have guided Colchester to successive wins in League One, in their opening two games in charge.

Kinsella is keen for that form to continue at Yeovil Town on Saturday - but has urged the U’s players not to get too carried away with their improved form.

Kinsella said: “We have to keep the momentum going.

“As soon as we got on the bus after the Swindon game, we were thinking about Yeovil.

“We have to keep our feet on the ground.

“We have to make sure that we don’t have any regrets and we don’t miss any detail.

“That’s what Joe’s main aim is, to keep on going, because we’ve got them in a good place.

“The players are enjoying their football and hopefully we can carry that on.”

Kinsella stressed that new boss Dunne has left his players in no doubt of what is expected of them.

The 40-year-old Republic of Ireland international believes the threat of the axe should be motivation enough for them to keep their places in the starting line-up.

“The players know what’s expected of them and Joe wants them to play attractive football,” said Kinsella, who made more than 250 league and cup appearances for Colchester before leaving them to join Charlton Athletic in September, 1996.

“He’s got the players into play that system and he’s got players ready to play, who know that system.

“If there is an injury or a lack of form, someone goes straight in and knows their job.

“If they don’t do it they’re out and that’s the idea.

“We can’t cut corners; you can either do it or you can’t and at this moment in time, we’ve got 11 lads who are doing it.

“We’ve also got a bench which has come on in the next two games that have got us over the line or carried on what we were doing and that’s all you can ask for.

“It’s a 20-man squad and we have to make sure that everyone is together and that the dressing room is good.

“There’s good characters in there who will keep everyone on the ground and not get too carried away.

“People like Doogie know what it takes to get out of this league.”
