Joe Dunne made a winning start to his reign as Colchester United manager following a convincing 3-1 win over Hartlepool United this afternoon.

Two goals from Jabo Ibehre, one of three players handed debuts by Dunne, helped the U's on their way to their first victory of the season.

Colchester made the worst possible start when they fell behind in the fifth minute to Craig Lynch's well-taken goal.

Steve Howard went close for the visitors after that but the U's stuck to the task and were rewarded with two goals in the space of four minutes, before half-time.

Gavin Massey's well-taken goal from Sanchez Watt's fine pass got them back on level terms.

And then Ibehre capitalised on Peter Hartley's error to put the U's ahead, soon after.

Colchester started the second half well and Hartlepool goalkeeper Scott Flinders made saves from both Ibehre and Marcus Bean.

But the U's extended their lead just after the hour when Ibehre scored his second of the game, after controlling and then converting Michael Rose's fine cross.

And Colchester comfortably saw the game out well to secure their first three-point haul of the campaign.

Fantastic game, now that's how you play football Ward. What a good display from the loanees, I personally think that Craig Eastmond was the main difference, as he made the players and defenders, keep the ball on the deck. He also did some fantastic passing, and showed us how to run with the ball. The wingers (Watt and Massey) were also great and threatened the defence countless times with penetrating runs inwards and a bit of trickery. Hopefully Henderson has learnt how to play down the wing from these guys, who created chances throughout. Brilliant and I'm now looking forward to the next game. Up the U's!!

Fantastic game ward would have despaired with all the flowing movement on the ball .Was a joy to watch Joe and as you say its only a start and sure we shall get set backs as long there is effort we cant complain.but i do think Joe,s next signing should be a goalkeeper not strong enough everytime he is near the ball i worry does,nt make the ball his with confidence. Apart from that most enjoyable afternoon and now looking forward to next home game.THANKS JOE WHAT A START

After an all round 5 hour trip again to watch the U's, I have come away feeling happy, entertained and like I have had value for money for the first time in a while. Joe Dunne what a start and the new signings look great. Ibehre looks a threat, debut goals, strong and was causing opposition defence problems all game. Best I have seen Massey play. Rose needs to improve on the defending side of his game but on the whole chuffed to bits wit the lads today. Playing like this we can beat anybody in the league whereas two or three weeks ago I couldn't see us beatin anybody.

Very true, defence maybe could be a bit more solid, two tough games coming up this week, be very nice if we could go on a decent run. Up the u's

Good to see dunne in the eadt not only praise the players but also hint at the bench and say how he knew he had a lot of class on there which could do turn the match, prob the best time to play Swindon away while our morale is high

This proved to the Ward follower's what's been wrong. Countless times I have said Wordsworth has got talent but can be lazy and wasted. Yesterday some of his passing from the middle of the pitch out to the players on the flanks was outstanding.Just needs to close down players and be more aggresive into tackles, then we have a gem. May be being captain yesterday gave him more responsibilty. Having wide players creates more space in the middle as you pull the opposition defenders out. At least I drove home happy to Hampshire thinking to myself , my bad dream has just finished and a happy new one is about to start. Well done and I shall be at Swindon on Tuesday evening. This most likely will be one of the hardest games of the season, having seen Swindon play on numerous occasions before.

Can't agree more, deff one of the hardest teams, ESP as their on a good run, and in my opinion will be them and sheff utd in top two at the end of season.
Also agree I think dunne will have him as captain so it doesn't give him the chance to switch off and that he keeps going for 9mins.
Would love to be there Tuesday I think it will be a belter of a game, certainly good for the neutral.
Up the u's

I live nr Totton where the great Terry Paine came from. My Daughter lives in North Essex so we stay with her a fair bit which helps with the travel. This Swindon game will be tough. They have two massive centre backs Aden Flint and Troy Archibald Henville who will be up for every corner or free kick and this worries me with Cousins lack of height in goal . With Matt Richie who I think is by far the best winger in the league on the right wing then Rose is going to have his work cut out big time to stop him from cutting and causing havoc in our defence. They have Jay Mc Eveley in midfield who again must be the best midfielder in Div 1 plus Benson who we should have signed but didnt up front, though he has been a sub recent. Overall if its possible to get a point , then it will be a dam good result but I do fear we could get taught a short sharp lesson tommorow evening.

Yeah I rate Ritchie too. I would rather Coker or White play at LB to be honest. We were due to sign Aden Flint originally but as it happened he I think it was the move to Swindon he chose instead. We might struggle at the back but hopefully if we play like Saturday, Ibehre, Massey and Watt will cause them problems too.
